Former President Obama on Monday touted Harvard University\u2019s rejection of what<\/a> he called \u201cham-handed\u201d demands from President Trump\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n \u201cHarvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions \u2013 rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking concrete steps to make sure all students at Harvard can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect,\u201d Obama said in a post on social platform X<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cLet\u2019s hope other institutions follow suit,\u201d the former president, who graduated from<\/a> Harvard Law School in 1991, added in the post.<\/p>\n Last week, the Trump administration demanded that Harvard change multiple policies \u2014 including those around protesting and diversity, equity and inclusion programs \u2014 so that it can hold on to its federal funding. On Monday, the school shot down the demands.<\/p>\n \u201cNo government \u2014 regardless of which party is in power \u2014 should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue,\u201d Harvard President Alan Garber said in a Monday message<\/a> to the Harvard community.<\/p>\n
